Beware is this 'High'

Motivation can be high for many at this time of year, which is fine to get things started.  It’s often this extra drive that’s gets you moving to try something different.

 

However…proceed with caution.

 

This initial new year motivational high DOES NOT last long (which is why most resolutions fail) and then people struggle to stay motivated once this excitement fades away.  There can be a few reasons for this…

 

…too many goals, not focusing on behaviours & daily actions, unrealistic expectations, no plan, no support, looking for quick fixes, not actually enjoying it and a lack of real motivation to change.

 

Look at that list and make sure you connect your outcomes to all of these and make sure you are connected to a deeper meaning and motivator to give you REAL motivation as opposed to just the initial high.

 

A good way to do that is grab yourself some quiet time and a journal/book/word doc/piece of paper and ask yourself the questions…

 

Why do I really want this?

What will this give me?

 

Ask yourself this question again and again after each of your response at least 5-6 times.  If you do this properly you will have a pretty long list of reasons and underlying motivators.  Some of these should be feelings; you should feel some emotion when you answer the questions.

 

When you do that, the changes you want to make will turn from ‘I should…’  to ‘I must…’ or ‘I need..’

 

A bonus question could be 'What will happen if I don't...?' 6months, 1 year, 5years, 10years from now...be honest)...knowing that painful answer is useful for your psychology too!

 

Then you need to go through and check that your new behaviour/actions/lifestyle and goals aren’t going to cause too much unexpected threat or stress to you & the people around you. 

 

That involves making sure things around you are set up to help and facilitate the path, making your changes and new habits easier to form.
